3。5 stars, the ending made up for most of the book, I’m not sure why Sue Grafton continues to endlessly describe Kinsey’s mundane life; making a sandwich, going for a run。 It takes away from the truly good parts of her writing。 This is a series so I don’t see a reason for introducing us to Kinsey and her world in every single book。 The books also keep getting longer and if those boring, repetitive details were taken out it would make for a much better read。

maybe the longest of her PI novels。。。 a good one too。 how the stories get woven together is pretty masterful。 Kinsey's backstory is getting pretty well told by now。。。 only 2 books left。。。 maybe the longest of her PI novels。。。 a good one too。 how the stories get woven together is pretty masterful。 Kinsey's backstory is getting pretty well told by now。。。 only 2 books left。。。 。。。more

Cats and dogs can’t stand moles, they will dig them up but my dog put a mole down with disgust in the garden and the cats have always left them on the patio without a mark on them - I suspect they smell and a tap on the nose can kill them, I believe。 Other than the mole thing I quite enjoyed the introduction of a kitty to the story。 It was quite sweet, wasn’t sure why the dr was trying to involve it in the fight but at least the kitty got to attack him。 The family on Kinsey’s fathers side was an interesting introduction- teaching us more about her background。 I’m quite intrigued to find out what she’ll do with the money。 (This does warn you about spoilers right?) not to mention choosing between two men that have declared an interest in her。 I’m looking forward to see if the homeless characters will pop up again in the last couple of books。。。。。nearly done! 。。。more

As I near the end of this series, I realize how much I am going to miss Kinsey, Henry, Rosie, William and all of the other crazy and wonderful characters Ms。 Grafton created。 I have grown to enjoy them all。 I will especially miss Kinsey。 I have had many LOL and cringe worthy moments and that (to me) is what contributes to a great story。 I also love how she connects all of her subplots into one cohesive story。 That is the mark of a great storyteller。I don't normally re read a book but I have a fe As I near the end of this series, I realize how much I am going to miss Kinsey, Henry, Rosie, William and all of the other crazy and wonderful characters Ms。 Grafton created。 I have grown to enjoy them all。 I will especially miss Kinsey。 I have had many LOL and cringe worthy moments and that (to me) is what contributes to a great story。 I also love how she connects all of her subplots into one cohesive story。 That is the mark of a great storyteller。I don't normally re read a book but I have a feeling that I will be revisiting these books again in the next few years。 。。。more

2。5 starsI think I am bored with this series but now I am so close to the end that I'm committed to just seeing it through。 In this installment, Kinsey's name and phone number are found in the pocket of a dead man - one she's never met or seen before。 Because of the connection, she gets wrapped up in the minutia of his life and family。 His death happens around the same time another PI in town was found dead。 At first, it seems like there is no connection to the two but as Kinsey tracks down the 2。5 starsI think I am bored with this series but now I am so close to the end that I'm committed to just seeing it through。 In this installment, Kinsey's name and phone number are found in the pocket of a dead man - one she's never met or seen before。 Because of the connection, she gets wrapped up in the minutia of his life and family。 His death happens around the same time another PI in town was found dead。 At first, it seems like there is no connection to the two but as Kinsey tracks down the dead man's family and begins to piece together his last days a connection becomes evident。 This sends Kinsey down an investigative road she didn't know she would travel。 It was okay but long。 So long! It has been a while since I read this series。 A lot of books have passed my way since then。 This book was published in the 80's and seemed a little dated, but the mystery was good。 What surprised me was the filler that Ms。 Grafton used。 There was a lot of what Kinsey was going to wear for the next outing, what she was eating and why, and descriptions of the scenery。 Most of that did nothing to advance the story and really didn't tell me much at all about the setting。 I like Henry and his relatio It has been a while since I read this series。 A lot of books have passed my way since then。 This book was published in the 80's and seemed a little dated, but the mystery was good。 What surprised me was the filler that Ms。 Grafton used。 There was a lot of what Kinsey was going to wear for the next outing, what she was eating and why, and descriptions of the scenery。 Most of that did nothing to advance the story and really didn't tell me much at all about the setting。 I like Henry and his relationship with Kinsey。 I guess I had forgotten her past relationships with the men in her life。 It is one of those stories that is interrupted midway by an event that happened in the past。 It startled me because I saw no relationship to the present mystery。 I finally got it。 All in all I liked the mystery。 It was good to catch up with Kinsey。 。。。more

In between my regular reading -- mostly non-fiction, as in theology, history, biography -- I like the change up that murder mysteries bring。 Sue Grafton is an engaging writer who is easy (comfortable) to read。

Kinsey is set to enjoy some needed time off when she gets pulled into the murder of a homeless man, due to her name and phone number found in her pocket。 She becomes involved with Dace, his friends Pearl and Felix, and the mystery around his death。 This leads her to another twisted plot involving a shady private eye that floats around St Theresa。A questionable medical trial and marital problems are also involved in the characters that Kinsey encounters in trying to solve this death。This book has Kinsey is set to enjoy some needed time off when she gets pulled into the murder of a homeless man, due to her name and phone number found in her pocket。 She becomes involved with Dace, his friends Pearl and Felix, and the mystery around his death。 This leads her to another twisted plot involving a shady private eye that floats around St Theresa。A questionable medical trial and marital problems are also involved in the characters that Kinsey encounters in trying to solve this death。This book has many more characters and entwining plots than some of her previous books 。。。more

Sue Grafton’s series is my mac & cheese。 Loved hearing how Kinsey was doing。

This is actually one of my favorite kinsey Millhone novels, due to the themes I can relate to, such as homelessness (been there recently), being the sole beneficiary/executor of the estate (been there twice regarding my parents), and Moving away for a fresh start but lacking resources (contacts, money, place to stay while looking for work) like the character of Anna。 Also I felt Kinsey was funnier than usual, but maybe it was just me。Sure, I didn't care much for the character of Pete and conside This is actually one of my favorite kinsey Millhone novels, due to the themes I can relate to, such as homelessness (been there recently), being the sole beneficiary/executor of the estate (been there twice regarding my parents), and Moving away for a fresh start but lacking resources (contacts, money, place to stay while looking for work) like the character of Anna。 Also I felt Kinsey was funnier than usual, but maybe it was just me。Sure, I didn't care much for the character of Pete and considered his chapters an interruption at times(especially when I wanted to know right away how Kinsey's interview with the former neighbor of Terrence's who had dementia went), but at least that went somewhere。Also, I like William's eulogy at the end of the book; I thought it was both honest and beautiful。One minor quibble: I thought Sue Grafton got a little carried away with her prose on page 149 and lapsed into poetry: "The sky was a washed-out blue, contrails like chalk marks beginning and ending with no apparent reason。 Sunlight caught the telephone wires and turned them silver, linking them from pole to pole like strands of spider silk"。 I think that's talented wording, and I read & write poetry myself, but it felt a little out of place, especially since before that poetry Kinsey said she "tuned into the moment at hand"。 Moment at hand, while she's driving on the highway? now, someone as a passenger in a vehicle on a highway I can understand, but it just didn't feel like Kinsey to me。Anyway though, I still really loved the story。 。。。more

I was intending to give this book a 2-star rating。 After all, nobody can write 25 books, and have all of them be a winner。Then, the bombshell dropped, and moved this up to a 3-star。

By far the worst in the alphabet series。 Boring from the start and a lackadaisical finish。 Wasted - yes, time in reading a 300 page story that took 500 pages to tell。

I was wondering when there would be less antagonism between Kinsey Millhone and the rest of the characters which have dominated the stories in the series up to this point。 This was an altogether gentler, mellower but no less interesting story from Ms Grafton。 This time there was less going back and forth between the time in which the story was set (1988) and earlier times to build character development。 Consequently, this was a much easier plot to follow - including the usual sub-plots which sto I was wondering when there would be less antagonism between Kinsey Millhone and the rest of the characters which have dominated the stories in the series up to this point。 This was an altogether gentler, mellower but no less interesting story from Ms Grafton。 This time there was less going back and forth between the time in which the story was set (1988) and earlier times to build character development。 Consequently, this was a much easier plot to follow - including the usual sub-plots which stopped it from getting to one-dimensional。 And Kinsey's usual 'brush with death' towards the end wasn't too drawn out or outlandish。 I look forward to reading the next two books - sadly all there will be, following Ms Grafton's passing。 。。。more

This Sue Grafton alphabet murder mystery starts off with two dead men - and PI Kinsey Millhone trying to make heads or tails of who, why, and how - along with the police detective of course。 So there are two story lines - one for each dead man。 There are lots of twist and turns。 It kept my attention。 I like Kinsey。 She had to delve into her past to come to grips with some of the events。 It is a bit of an expose' on the homeless, who play quite a role in this story。 The ending was pretty touching This Sue Grafton alphabet murder mystery starts off with two dead men - and PI Kinsey Millhone trying to make heads or tails of who, why, and how - along with the police detective of course。 So there are two story lines - one for each dead man。 There are lots of twist and turns。 It kept my attention。 I like Kinsey。 She had to delve into her past to come to grips with some of the events。 It is a bit of an expose' on the homeless, who play quite a role in this story。 The ending was pretty touching and made me re-think some of my preconceived notions。 。。。more

It’s been years since I read her early novels and for some reason I’m reading them backwards。 I read X recently and now I’ve just read W。 W is much better than X but still seems like a middle of the pack type of book。 I found several things to be incredulous。 The circumstances of her financial windfall seems unbelievable。 Some of her characters are also somewhat unlikeable such as two of her new found cousins。 It does strike me as odd that her character Kinsey Millhone never seems to age and the It’s been years since I read her early novels and for some reason I’m reading them backwards。 I read X recently and now I’ve just read W。 W is much better than X but still seems like a middle of the pack type of book。 I found several things to be incredulous。 The circumstances of her financial windfall seems unbelievable。 Some of her characters are also somewhat unlikeable such as two of her new found cousins。 It does strike me as odd that her character Kinsey Millhone never seems to age and the setting of her novels are still placed in the 1980s。 Although that is a bit fun in terms of the nostalgia, it also keeps her character stuck in one place and never developing or growing。 I realize that if time did carry-on forward, Henry would no longer be with us and he is an important ongoing character in her novels。 Her message about respecting those who are homeless was laudable and the final scene was touching if not a bit syrupy。 Odd that William seems to take on a major role at the end when I don’t really even recall him from the previous novels。 An entertaining read but perhaps not one of her best。 。。。more
